Long hair, faraway look, passionate music, demonic piano technique – this is the idea we have of the great composer and pianist Franz Liszt. But he was a lot more … and a lot different: for us he is the infant prodigy who was twelve years old when he first came to Pest-Buda with his father; he is the proud patriot who, after the terrible flood in 1838, supported the reconstruction of the ruined city by giving a series of charity concerts; he is the bohemian artist who loved women and a good coffee; and he is the self-defined Hungarian who enjoyed Gypsy music, and insisted on advertising his concerts in Hungarian only.

As we walk the streets of Pest, we shall see what Franz Liszt saw of the 19th-century city – he will be our guide when we visit the Downtown Parish Church. And with his guidance we may understand why the artist who was celebrated all over Europe chose to open the first Academy of Music in the stinking Fish Square of Downtown Pest.
